The Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne is the city at its best dressed. Sharp suits, big hats and a crowd that is not ready to go home when the last race is run. If your day at the track deserves a proper finish, The Men's Gallery at 601 Lonsdale St is a short trip into the CBD, with doors open from 6pm.

This guide covers the key race days, how to plan your night after the races, and how to bring a group without the stress.

Race days

The carnival runs over several weeks, from Caulfield in mid-October to Sandown in mid-November. Here are the big race days for 2026:

  • Caulfield Cup, Saturday 17 October (Caulfield)

  • Cox Plate, Saturday 24 October (Flemington this year, while The Valley is redeveloped)

  • Victoria Derby Day, Saturday 31 October (Flemington)

  • Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November (Flemington)

  • Oaks Day, Thursday 5 November (Flemington)

  • Champions Stakes Day, Saturday 7 November (Flemington)

  • Zipping Classic Day, Saturday 14 November (Sandown)

Two of them draw the biggest crowds back into the city.

Derby Day, Saturday 31 October. The traditional opener of Cup Week and the most stylish day on the calendar. It also falls on Halloween this year, so expect the CBD to be busy from late afternoon. Read: Halloween in Melbourne CBD: Where to Party

Melbourne Cup, Tuesday 3 November. The race that stops the nation, and a public holiday in Melbourne.

Our tip: plan the night before you plan the outfit. Race days fill up fast across the city, and the best evenings are the ones where nobody is standing on a footpath working out where to go next.

Kicking on after the races in the CBD

Most racegoers head back into the city once the final race is done. The Men's Gallery is open from 6pm, and on Saturdays the night runs until 8am (closing times may vary), so there is no rush to wind down. If you are planning a Melbourne Cup after party, doors open from 6pm on Cup Day too (closing at 5am on Tuesdays).

Inside, it is a world away from the track. Low light, a polished room and performers who know how to hold a crowd. Stage shows run through the night, and the atmosphere builds as more race-day groups arrive. It is glamorous, it is a little bit daring, and it suits a crowd that has spent the day dressed to impress.

What to know before you arrive:

  • Dress code. Smart casual is preferred, and your race-day outfit will fit right in. We do not admit singlets, steel-capped boots, flip-flops, caps or workwear.

  • No cameras. Camera glasses and recording equipment are strictly not allowed. What happens at the Gallery stays at the Gallery.

  • ID. Entry is 18+ only, and photo ID is required. Bring it, even if you are well past 18.

  • Getting here. We are at 601 Lonsdale St, Melbourne CBD.

  • Entry. Race days are business as usual, with our standard hours, entry and pricing.

There is no special race-day event here, and there does not need to be. After a big day at the track, The Men's Gallery is simply the place to kick on.

Coming as a group

Spring Racing is one of the most popular times of year for bucks parties, work functions and birthday groups. If you are bringing a crowd, booking ahead is the easiest way to keep the night moving.

Our functions team can help you plan an evening that suits your group, whether it is a handful of mates from the members' enclosure or a full office outing after Cup Day. Booking ahead means less waiting at the door and more time enjoying the night.

Make your enquiry through our Bucks and Functions page, and tell us the date, your group size and the kind of night you are after.
